Alternative Compliance Approaches:

International Energy Conservation Code 2006

The following are alternative approaches that Labor & Industry customers may use to demonstrate compliance with the International Energy Conservation Code 2006.

  1. Software reports for the Total Building Performance Method may be used as long as:

    • The following mandatory sections of the International Energy Conservation Code 2006 are satisfied:

      502.4
      502.5
      503.2
      504
      505.2
      505.3
      505.4
      505.6
      505.7
      Air Leakage
      Moisture Control
      Provisions Applicable to Mechanical Systems
      Service Water Heating
      Lighting Controls
      Tandem Wiring
      Exit Signs
      Exterior Lighting
      Electrical Energy Consumption
    • The annual energy costs projected by building performance model do not exceed those of the standard design outlined in section 506.4 of the International Energy Conservation Code 2006 and,

    • The applicant submits a statement that the software utilized satisfies the requirements of the ANSI/ASHRAE 140-2001 Standard Method of Test for the Evaluation of Building Energy Analysis Computer Programs.

  2. Software reports for the Energy Cost Budget Method may be used to demonstrate compliance with the International Energy Conservation Code 2006 as long as:

    • The following mandatory sections of the ASHRAE 90.1 2004 are satisfied:

      5.4
      6.4
      7.4
      8.4
      9.4
      10.4
Mandatory Provisions concerning the Building Envelope
      Mandatory Provisions concerning HVAC
Mandatory Provisions concerning Service Hot Water
      Mandatory Provisions concerning Electrical Power
      Mandatory Provisions concerning Lighting
      Mandatory Provisions concerning Other Equipment
    • The design energy cost does not exceed the energy cost budget as defined in sections 11.2 and 11.3 of the ASHRAE 90.1 2004.

    • The efficiency level of the components specified in the building design meet or exceed the efficiency level of the components used to calculate the design energy cost. and,

    • The applicant submits a statement indicating that the software utilized satisfies the requirements of the ANSI/ASHRAE 140-2001 Standard Method of Test for the Evaluation of Building Energy Analysis Computer Programs.
