SCHOLARS in SERVICE to PENNSYLVANIA

This exciting initiative, entitled SCHOLARS in SERVICE to PENNSYLVANIA, is the first of its kind in Pennsylvania, and supports the Governor’s commitment to improving the quality of life in Pennsylvania through educating our state, and enhancing the ability of our communities to retain and attract dedicated, young, bright, talent. For that reason, the university students who serve as AmeriCorps members in communities across the Commonwealth will be addressing a multiplicity of locally-identified needs. Primary emphasis will be placed, however, on the academic achievement of pre-school, elementary and secondary students, and on improving college access. While the needs of Pennsylvania citizens span urban and rural communities, and areas of poverty and risk are not limited by geography, we are fortunate to have a large share of a treasured national resource - institutions of higher education, and their students. Accordingly, Pennsylvania is in a unique position to focus an education -awards service program on college students, some of whom have faced academic and/or financial challenges, and to encourage them to focus their service upon pre-K through 12th grade students similarly situated. In this way, SCHOLARS in SERVICE to PENNSYLVANIA can foster the academic success and the corresponding employment success of two “generations” of students, those currently in college and those younger students who can only aspire thereto without additional support. In addition, efforts will be made to leverage these AmeriCorps resources to strengthen and expand Federal Work Study community service programs.

PennSERVE has a track record of accomplishments in expanding service networks, linking opportunities, and including other partners in a wide variety of national and community service endeavors. Its Citizenship Initiative, begun in 2003, seeks to engage every Pennsylvanian in the essence of our participatory democracy. PennSERVE is itself fortunate to collaborate with organizations like PACC and PHENND whose extensive network of campus and community partners is already working to solve critical problems of local concern. We welcome you to join us in this mission.

The SCHOLARS in SERVICE to PENNSYLVANIA program will provide a concerted statewide outreach effort to build quality service programs, enhance campus/community collaborations, and perhaps most importantly, offer Pennsylvania college students the opportunity to serve. The creation of a network of peer institutions to support one another, on-going training and technical assistance, and the incentive of the AmeriCorps Education Award, will enable Pennsylvania’s colleges and universities to participate in a unique community service endeavor destined to augment the culture of service and leadership already apparent on their campuses. This focus on civic engagement and community/campus partnerships will be inherently sustainable, promising many generations of future leaders the ability to build a better Pennsylvania.
